My Korean American Picnic Kit

A picnic kit embodying my Korean American identity, with respect to my ancestry, my heritage—the history that I carry—and the historical context of the changes between the generations of my lineage.

This Picnic Kit Contains:

1. My grandparents’ box: Handmade traditional 한과 (Made with clay)

곶감, 강정, 연근정과, 꿀떡, 약과, 매작과, 양갱, 유과, 다식

2. My parents' box: Freshly baked 포장마차 (Pojangmacha) street food

붕어빵 (“Carp Bread”), 달고나 (“Dalgona) , 호떡 (“Hotteok:), 핫도그 ("Hot dog”).

3. My box: Convenience store (편의점) packaged snacks

Banana Kick, Choco Heim, Butter Waffle, Choco Pie, Honey Twist Snack, Pepero, Choco Boy, Spam, Shin Ramen.

4. Bojagi-blanket (to wrap it all up): a patterned 보자기 (Bojagi wrapping cloth)—with each red square representing a Korean name stamp (a symbol of official identification)—altogether imitating the iconic red checkered picnic blanket—an emblem of Americana.
